As South Africa and the rest of the world face ongoing lockdown restrictions, business is being forced to reassess how they operate.

With this in mind WearCheck has adapted their Mobius training sessions to be done in the safety of a delegate’s home.

Lead technician for WearCheck, Dennis Swanepoel, believes that upskilling staff during the non-productive hours of lockdown is a positive solution, which does not put staff at any risk of exposure to harmful germs as no travelling or contact is required.

All the Mobius courses that are traditionally offered by WearCheck are now available online, including Vibration Analysis CAT 1, CAT 2, CAT 3, Precision Balancing, Precision Shaft Alignment and Asset Reliability Practitioner courses 1, 2 and 3.

The Mobius training is structured with the option of two course formats:

1. Self-paced online training: access for six months to the videos and training material, with access to an expert CAT IV instructor to answer specific questions during the six-month period prior to the exam.
2. Virtual classroom training: live online training sessions for the normal course duration, giving the full advantage of a classroom full of live interaction with other delegates and the instructor (minus the risk of exposure to travel and limited physical interaction in close contact). The assessment is completed online after the course. The dates for these courses are listed below.

Investment in ongoing skills training and knowledge development with WearCheck has been proven time and again to produce excellent returns, enabling companies to reap the rewards through enhanced condition monitoring programmes, reduced maintenance costs and greater asset reliability and longevity.

Keeping machinery running smoothly is key to the efficient running of any mechanical operation, and those at the ‘coal face’ of the equipment – the machinery operators – are in prime position to monitor the condition of the components.

Upskilling operators to ensure that their machines are in perfect working order goes a long way to avoiding unplanned breakdowns. WearCheck has just launched a new course in which operators are trained in asset care, to remedy minor problems before the maintenance department is called in.

Course delegates earn three CPD points and cover the following areas of training: managing equipment lubrication, containing harmful debris, the importance of cleaning and inspection, the differences between age-related and random failures, inspection techniques, the importance of bearing, seal and lubrication failure as well as using activity boards and other related skills.

Course facilitator Jaco Kleynhans, from Gert Oberholzer Consulting, has over 20 years’ experience in machinery maintenance as well as training. His insight into component maintenance has been developed through working in many industries, including automotive, production, mining and civil construction.

Diagnostician Quinton Verster was invited by Cummins to present the benefits of condition monitoring to a group of matric pupils as part of their recent work experience programme.

Specialist engine manufacturers Cummins have been customers of WearCheck for many years. Keeping the engines running smoothly with only planned maintenance and no surprise component failures is a crucial element of Cummins’ quality practice, therefore a good preventive maintenance strategy is key.

WearCheck diagnostician Quinton Verster outlines the benefits of condition monitoring to a group of Clairwood High School matrics who recently visited engine manufacturers Cummins in Durban recently.

Customers in many corners of Africa have signed up for WearCheck training recently, to enhance their investment in their condition monitoring programme.

Technical manager Steven Lumley conducted training for engine manufacturer Cummins recently.

The training for Cummins, which took place at the Cummins South Africa training facility in Johannesburg, was customised especially for the customer.  Topics included an introduction to oils, additives, application storage, the tests performed and the relevance of each one, and well as the interpretation of test results.

Cummins develops engines for specialist applications such as on highway, off highway and marine. Engaging the best possible methods for keeping the engines running at optimum output is of great value, therefore WearCheck training is an important part of the maintenance strategy.

WearCheck’s laboratories in Gauteng recently welcomed new clients Hitachi Ltd., who signed up for condition monitoring services - in particular, oil analysis - for their mining and construction operations across the African continent.

The Japanese-based company focuses on social innovation across a range of business sectors, including power and infrastructure systems, information and telecommunication systems, construction machinery, high functional materials and components, automotive systems, healthcare and others.

Hitachi has engaged WearCheck as a support chain partner in the development of their oil analysis programme.

Delegates from Hitachi Ltd. recently attended an oil analysis training course in Johannesburg, run by WearCheck’s technical manager, Steven Lumley
